CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF
BISMARCK'S HISTORY

A defining landmark in Bismarck's history, The McKenzie Hotel was built by lawman and politician Alexander McKenzie and opened its doors on New Year's Day, 1911. Rising 10 stories with 150 rooms, it quickly became the tallest structure in the city, a distinction it held until the ND State Capitol was completed in 1934.

The hotel was the unofficial political headquarters of ND politics for decades, hosting Presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson, in addition to lawmakers, landowners, and those who shaped ND into what it is today.

Former owner Ed Patterson, an amateur boxer, also received visits to the hotel from boxing legends Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis.

The McKenzie Steakhouse and Lounge is located in the lobby of this iconic hotel and honors its legacy, carrying forward a tradition of gathering, dining, and hospitality in the center of the capital city.

Join us to dine where legends have walked the halls, shook hands, and molded society in this very lobby.
